Who is the client?

Ampol is the largest transport energy distributor and retailer in Australia. They are a rarity in the energy industry as they are an independent, Australian-owned company and headquartered in Sydney.

Ampol supplies fuel to approximately 80,000 customers in diverse sectors including defence, mining, transport, marine, agriculture, aviation and more. The Ampol retail network serve approximately three million customers every week with fuel and convenience products

What was their business challenge?

Due to massive macroeconomic, societal, and environmental changes Ampol is undergoing a once-in-a-100-year transformation into a broader energy business.

As detailed in the Future Energy Strategy, Ampol must become a modern digital driven energy retailer and distributor who can offer new high-growth services such electric vehicle charging, retail electricity to residential customers, alternative fuels, integrated payments and contextual promotions & offers.

As a traditional oil and fuel company with a deep history spanning over 120 years, Ampol’s processes and systems were established in a different era. They couldn’t meet the needs of these more modern products which required digital capabilities for commercially viability.

What did we deliver?

Digizoo has provided key staff to enable and scale the Ampol Digital Team, allowing the company to embark on a journey of significant change in their business as they establish a suite of new products and channels for distribution. As one team, Digizoo and Ampol staff have together:

  • Led the delivery and market entry of the Future Energy Strategy’s digital products
  • Delivered necessary integrations with the Australian Energy Market Operator,
  • Delivered new billing systems and back-office servicing applications.
  • Integrated the new products into an updated set of the Ampol apps.

These new apps provide the foundation for an integrated customer experience across all new and emerging products.

What were the business outcomes?

The new apps were re-engineered in rapid timeframes and went live without a hitch, leading to a huge improvement in NPS and app store ratings.

New frameworks and ways of working provided by Digizoo have also helped Ampol to recruit and retain a higher calibre of more-engaged staff within UX, software engineering, and delivery roles.

Ultimately, Ampol is transforming into a leader in energy distribution and is looking to use their rapid adaptability to further increase their product offerings in the future.
